Office: Allen 331[/textblock][faq title=”About” ]One constant during my career has been the dedicated mentorship that I have received during all stages of my career, and I strive to emulate these experiences in my role as a mentor to undergraduates, professional students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Consequently, I am fully wedded to the proposition that successful mentoring means putting the interests of my mentees first to ensure that they can grow and excel both in their careers and personal lives.

Since July 2000, 17 PhD students have graduated with my mentorship, with one third-year PhD student (8 women, 10 men; 4 Biotechnology Training Program students). Of those who have graduated, all but one is employed in a science career with industry, academia, state agencies or federal agencies. I have served on over 70 PhD graduate student committees and have guided seven post-doctoral fellows (plus one current). I have served over six years on the WSU Honors Council, and I guided five successful honors thesis projects. I have also mentored another 24 undergraduates (one McNair Scholar) in the lab, most of whom completed the equivalent of an independent summer research project.

I have gained mentorship and additional relevant experience through service on executive committees for two NIH-funded T32 grants (GM08336 and AI07025). I have served as the Director of the Immunology and Infectious Disease Program and as the Associate Director for Research and Graduate Education at the Allen School. I have gained additional administrative experience from my service with the WSU Faculty Senate, and as Interim Director of the Allen School. I am also an elected member of the Board of Directors for the Washington State Academy of Sciences where I serve on the education committee, and I am chair of the communications committee.[/faq][/column][/row][row layout=”side-left” ][column][textblock][/textblock][/column][column][textblock]Program Coordinator: Matt Peck

Phone: (509)-335-3864[/textblock][faq title=”About” ]My mission is to implement research-informed improvements in STEM graduate education and research culture. To do this, I draw on 15 years of teaching, mentoring, and program-building experiences and 10 years of protein biochemistry research activity. I like to create and deliver fun, authentic scientific experiences that develop scientists, increase scientific literacy, and improve education outcomes.

My specific roles as coordinator for the Biotech program include: (1) expanding access to and building inclusive environments for graduate education, especially for historically underrepresented populations; (2) writing and coordinating faculty training that catalyzes productive mentorship relationships for program participants; (3) mentoring student leaders in using modern and research-proven pedagogy and evaluation in student-driven activities; (4) serving as the primary instructor for program courses; (5) providing individualized counseling to facilitate career development and help students reach traditional graduate training outcomes; (6) coordinating internal and external communication; and (7) creating and analyzing program evaluation.

Please reach out with any questions about the program![/faq][/column][/row]
